BAKOM ÖGONLOCKEN

LARS LENGQUIST

Jan 17th - March 1st 2020

"The smell of the hospital's glossy floors,

rotting flowers, and Greek temple ruins.

Pictures from my visual background noise.

What is played up when I close my eyes."

-------------------------------

The red lanterns that hang above the tree tops, the rooftops and along the highways are, in Lars Lengquist's world, points of comfort. And the endless linoleum floors in the corridors of the hospital are a place where neighbors rush around on wheeled boards instead of legs. A place where both the smell of morphine stomachs and aspiring doctors take place.

The old aviation fleet in this exhibition is hidden under layers of snow, and the beautiful rotting flowers are reminiscent of an edgy debate climate and the comfort of the fact that the apocalypse is likely to give life to something new.

And everywhere people close their eyes, and play their own inner films behind their closed eyes.

"My thoughts revolved around my visual heritage. As it was there all the time. My own pictures. My background noise. Which could not be categorized or arranged in styles or eras. The things that I had always been drawn to, and for which I had a kind of tactile deeper feeling. The things that were nothing special, but that always caught my attention. Things that make me warm. Which I simply like." - READ MORE HERE!

When Lars started to photograph some of these pictures: Huddinge hospital, vanita motifs, comforting telephone posts, people closing their eyes, the closed down aircraft fleet F18, the backyard of the divorce apartment at Kungsholmen and the power plant in Umeå, the pictures did not always get as strong as they were in his head.

But some pictures became powerful and different, and somewhat deviated from his basic intention. they became something else. But always with some form of magical connection to the those basic moments.

As it always is, behind your eyelids.
